AN INTERACTIVE DECISION GUIDE

Repair or replace an appliance? Compare the real numbers.

An appliance’s age matters, but it should not replace a written diagnosis. Use this simple comparison to understand the size of a quoted repair, then add safety, expected reliability and replacement features to your decision.

DON’T FORGET THESE QUESTIONS

Five things that a ratio cannot measure

  1. Is there an electrical, gas or water safety concern?
  2. Is the diagnosis supported by testing?
  3. Has this appliance needed multiple repairs?
  4. Does the new model meet your size and accessibility needs?
  5. What warranties apply to each option?

How to compare quotes without invented price ranges

Start with an itemized estimate. A line reading “repair $400” is less useful than one that separates the diagnostic fee, labor, parts, taxes, warranty and any return-trip charge. Ask if the diagnostic charge applies to the approved repair. If the business cannot explain what was tested, request clarification before approving the work.

Then compare it to a genuinely comparable replacement—not the cheapest model on the shelf. Include delivery, installation, removal, electrical or plumbing changes, and changes in energy use. A 40% repair-to-replacement ratio does not automatically mean “repair”; it means the quote is 40% of the comparison price.

When a safety issue changes the decision

Gas leaks, overheating electrical components, persistent burning smells, and uncontrolled water leakage should be resolved by qualified professionals. Do not keep operating an appliance simply because a spreadsheet suggests the repair looks economical.

When energy consumption belongs in the calculation

For refrigerators, ENERGY STAR provides a replacement energy-use tool. Use verified model data where possible. A generic “new units save 50%” claim is not a reliable estimate for a specific household.

A practical conversation to have with a provider

“What did you test? What is the full installed cost? Are parts available? How much would I owe if I decline? What warranty applies? What would make you recommend replacement instead?” Those answers are more useful than an arbitrary age cutoff.
